Teaching an old dog new tricks: broadband phase matching in ultrafast optics
Phase matching of broadband fields in birefringent nonlinear crystals for ultrashort laser pulse metrology, time-resolved molecular spectroscopy, and many more.
Deeper understanding of phase matching of broadband fields in birefringent nonlinear crystals has revealed previously unexplored degrees of freedom in the three wave mixing process driven by short laser pulses.
Starting from basic concepts, I will present recent works in this field that have led to a number of applications: first in ultrashort laser pulse metrology, where both spectrographic (FROG) as well as interferometric (SPIDER) techniques have been implemented in simplified, robust arrangements, later in time-resolved molecular spectroscopy (where the spectrometer was not needed any more) and ultimately in generation of single photons in pure quantum states (image by Union Optic).
